Overview
Mexico is no longer just a border dental and cosmetic surgery destination. In recent years they have become known as a global healthcare location offering patients treatments that rival competitor nations.
Most medical travelers (around 200,000) are Americans looking for an affordable healthcare option. According to
Patients Beyond Borders, approximately 1.1 million are undocumented Hispanics returning home for care. Visitors are seeking cancer treatment, orthopedics and cardiology due to the high cost in the U.S.
Border towns are still very popular for dentistry, vision (Lasik) and cosmetic surgery such as aging spot treatments. The quality is high, the prices low. Dentists have access to medications and products not yet approved in the U.S. reducing pain and increasing quality of materials.
Health and wellness tourism is also on the rise with travelers seeking spa treatments along with cosmetic surgery and weight loss in areas such as Cancun.

Securing Your Money When You Travel
Carrying large amounts of cash is obviously unsafe in a foreign country. Also, be careful using your credit cards when you travel. Never give out your PIN, never let anyone else swipe your card and don't ever let anyone take your card out of your sight (example: at a restaurant). Make sure your cards are "Chip" enabled, require a PIN to use and carry in a wallet or case that shields the data from being scanned on the street.
Many clinics are no longer accepting personal checks, cash or travelers checks. Wire transfer and credit cards are your best bet however they can come with high bank fees per use internationally, variable exchange fees and lower daily spending limits when being used in a foreign country.
